Ces choses à savoir pour un voyage à Hong Kong

En 2023, la compagnie aérienne Cathay Pacific a mis en place un jeu concours afin de gagner un aller/retour en avion pour Hong Kong dans le but d'y relancer le tourisme suite à la pandémie. Figurant parmi les gagnants Français, j'ai fait ma valise en fin d'année pour découvrir cette ancienne colonie Britannique qui est aujourd'hui une Région Administrative Spéciale de Chine. Très intéressée par cette destination, j'ai tout de même eu quelques difficultés à trouver des informations claires pour organiser mon voyage en tant qu'Européenne mais suite à mon expérience, voici mes conseils et informations pratiques pour préparer un séjour à Hong Kong.
In 2023, the airline Cathay Pacific set up a competition to win a return flight to Hong Kong with the aim of relaunching tourism there following the pandemic. Being among the French winners, I packed my suitcase at the end of the year to discover this former British colony which is today a Special Administrative Region of China. Very interested by this destination, I had some difficulty finding clear informations to organize my trip as a European but following my experience, here are my tips and practical informations for preparing a stay in Hong Kong.

Quelles formalités pour partir à Hong Kong lorsque l'on est Français ?

Pas besoin de Visa pour tout voyage de moins de 3 mois lorsque l'on est Français et que l'on envisage de partir à Hong Kong ni d'obligation de vaccination particulière. Néanmoins, il faut être en possession d'un passeport valide le jour du départ et jusqu'à 1 mois après la date de départ de Hong Kong.

No need for a Visa for any trip of less than 3 months when you are French and planning to go to Hong Kong nor any special vaccination obligation. However, you must be in possession of a valid passport on the day of departure and up to 1 month after the date of departure from Hong Kong.

Souscrire à une assurance

Terminé de partir à l'autre bout du monde sans souscrire à une assurance avant mon départ ! Si la plupart des banques proposent aujourd'hui cette option avec notre carte bancaire, il faut savoir que les plafonds sont généralement trop bas pour prendre en charge un éventuel gros problème de santé ou un accident une fois sur place.

No more going to the other side of the world without taking out insurance before my departure ! Although most banks today offer this option with our bank card, you should know that the limits are generally too low to cover a possible major health problem or an accident once there.

Pour se couvrir d'une façon optimale il existe plusieurs agences mais celle que je choisis systématiquement c'est Chapka et son forfait " Cap Assistance 24/24 ", idéal pour mes voyages de moins de 3 mois.

To get optimal coverage there are several agencies but the one I systematically choose is Chapka and its “Cap Assistance 24/24” package, ideal for my trips of less than 3 months.

Avoir internet sur son téléphone

Un point que je juge essentiel et indispensable pour utiliser les applications de géolocalisation, chercher de nouvelles visites à l'improviste ou tout simplement rester joignable sur les réseaux sociaux. Si plusieurs opérateurs français incluent dans notre forfait la possibilité d'avoir accès à internet dans d'autres pays, sans frais supplémentaires mais dans certaines limites tout de même, Hong Kong ne fait pas toujours partie de la liste.

A point that I consider essential for using geolocation applications, looking for new visits or simply staying reachable on social networks. If several French operators include in our package the possibility of having internet access in other countries, at no additional cost but still within certain limits, Hong Kong isn't always part of the list.

Pour régler ce problème, il existe plusieurs options dont celle du pocket wifi pour laquelle j'ai optée. Bien consciente des avantages et inconvénients de ce boitier j'ai fait ma réservation en ligne, avant mon départ, sur Klook.com où plusieurs opérateurs, boitiers, e-sim, options sont répertoriés. A mon arrivée à Hong Kong, j'ai récupéré mon boitier, chargé et opérationnel pour Hong Kong et Macao, au stand du fournisseur d'accès à internet qui était " Song WIFI " avant de le ramener à ce même stand le jour de mon retour en France.

To resolve this problem, there are several options including pocket wifi which I opted for. Well aware of the advantages and disadvantages of this box, I made my reservation online, before my departure, on Klook.com where several operators, boxes, e-sim, options are listed. On my arrival in Hong Kong, I collected my box, charged and operational for Hong Kong and Macau, at the stand of the internet service provider which was "Song WIFI" before bringing it back to this same stand on the day of my return to France.

Où loger à Hong Kong ?

Kowloon est le premier lieu à envisager lorsque l'on cherche un hébergement à Hong Kong. Assez central, on y trouve beaucoup d'activités, restaurants, quartiers dynamiques et lieux emblématiques dont l'Avenue of Stars ou le célèbre K11 Musea.

Kowloon is the first place to consider when looking for accommodation in Hong Kong. Quite central, there are many activities, restaurants, dynamic neighborhoods and emblematic places including the Avenue of Stars or the famous K11 Musea.

Vient ensuite l'île de Hong Kong avec des prix, certes, un peu plus chers. L'idéal étant de trouver un hébergement plutôt situé au nord car c'est ici que passe l'unique ligne de métro de l'île, appelée Island Line, où un changement vers Kowloon est possible aux stations Central et Admiralty.

Next comes Hong Kong Island with slightly more expensive prices. The ideal is to find accommodation located in the north because this is where the island's only metro line passes, called the Island Line, where a change to Kowloon is possible at Central and Admiralty stations.

Un point essentiel à prendre en compte est que se loger à Hong Kong n'est pas bon marché ! Réserver en avance est plus que judicieux car les prix grimpent très vite dans cette partie du monde où les habitants eux mêmes on du mal à se loger ...

An essential point to take into account is that accommodation in Hong Kong isn't cheap ! Booking in advance is more than wise because prices rise very quickly in this part of the world where the inhabitants themselves have difficulty finding accommodation ...

Combien de temps partir à Hong Kong ?

Loin d'être une destination bon marché, notamment lorsque l'on regarde le prix des hébergements, un séjour à Hong Kong peut vite coûter cher ... Pour profiter sans se ruiner, 1 semaine complète sur place me semble être un bon compromis. Pendant ces quelques jours, il est possible de découvrir les meilleurs endroits à visiter sur l'île de Hong Kong et de Kowloon, prévoir d'aller au village de Ngong Ping voir le Tian Tan Buddha et même passer 1 journée à Macao. Cette durée sera également suffisante pour constater que les Hongkongais sont globalement très accueillants !

Far from being a cheap destination, especially when you look at the price of accommodation, a stay in Hong Kong can quickly become expensive... To enjoy it without breaking the bank, 1 full week there seems to me to be a good compromise. During these few days, it's possible to discover the best places to visit on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, plan to go to the village of Ngong Ping to see the Tian Tan Buddha and even spend 1 day in Macau. This duration will also be sufficient to see that the Hong Kong people are generally very welcoming !

Quand partir à Hong Kong ?

S'il est difficile d'avoir une réponse exacte sur le sujet, il se dit généralement que la période automnale en France est idéale pour partir à Hong Kong où le climat est sec et la chaleur raisonnable. Après y avoir passé 1 semaine en décembre, je confirme qu'il y fait encore grand soleil pour une température autour des 20° très appréciable !

Although it's difficult to have an exact answer on the subject, it's generally said that the autumn period in France is ideal for going to Hong Kong where the climate is dry and the heat reasonable. After spending 1 week there in December, I confirm that it's still sunny and the temperature is around 20° which is very pleasant !

Les fêtes de fin d'année à Hong Kong

La religion catholique n'est pas majoritaire à Hong Kong et pourtant on y fête quand même Noël ! A cette occasion, le 25 décembre est férié pour les habitants qui en profitent pour prendre quelques jours de vacances supplémentaires. Villages de Noël et marchés ont été mis en place pour l'occasion tandis que les malls sortent leurs plus belles décorations qui attirent adultes et enfants.

The Catholic religion isn't in the majority in Hong Kong and yet we still celebrate Christmas there ! At this occasion, December 25 is a public holiday for residents who take the opportunity to take a few extra days of vacation. Christmas villages and markets have been set up for the occasion while the malls bring out their most beautiful decorations which attract adults and children.

Tandis que le Nouvel An Lunaire approche en Asie, Hong Kong célèbre également le Nouvel An selon le calendrier grégorien. Tout comme en Europe, le 31 décembre est donc l'occasion de faire la fête en admirant un feu d'artifice le long de Victoria Harbor.

As the Lunar New Year approaches in Asia, Hong Kong also celebrates the New Year according to the Gregorian calendar. Just like in Europe, December 31 is an opportunity to celebrate while admiring fireworks along Victoria Harbor. 

Rejoindre Central Hong Kong ou Kowloon depuis l'aéroport

Taxis et bus peuvent être une solution pour rejoindre Hong Kong depuis l'aéroport mais la navette de l'Airport Express est de loin la solution la plus simple et rapide. Pour un prix autour de 13 euros en 2024, il est possible de rejoindre Central Hong Kong en près de 25 minutes juste après un arrêt à Kowloon.

Taxis and buses can be a solution to reach Hong Kong from the airport but the Airport Express shuttle is by far the quickest and simplest solution. For a price around 13 euros in 2024, it's possible to reach Central Hong Kong in almost 25 minutes just after a stop in Kowloon.

 

Communiquer à Hong Kong

Le Cantonais et l'Anglais font partie des 2 langues officielles parlées à Hong Kong. Néanmoins, j'ai eu l'impression que même si l'Anglais est maitrisé dans les hôtels et commerces ce n'est pas du tout cette langue qui est principalement utilisée ! A l'inverse de ce que l'on peut lire sur internet et dans les guides touristiques, la réalité une fois sur place est toute autre. L'anglais est loin d'être la langue que l'on entend partout et même si tout est globalement traduit depuis le Cantonais il y a quand même des lieux où ce n'est pas le cas.

Cantonese and English are the 2 official languages spoken in Hong Kong. However, I had the impression that even if English is mastered in hotels and shops, it's not at all this language that is mainly used ! Contrary to what you can read on the internet and in tourist guides, the reality once there is quite different. English is far from being the language we hear everywhere and even if everything is generally translated from Cantonese there are still places where this is not the case.

Payer à Hong Kong

La monnaie à Hong Kong est le Dollar Hongkongais ( HDK ). Elle s'utilise à Hong Kong mais également à Macao où l'on peut payer avec. A l'inverse, il est impossible de payer ses achats à Hong Kong avec la monnaie de Macao qui est le Pataca ( MOP ).

The currency in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Dollar (HDK). It's used in Hong Kong but also in Macau where you can pay with it. Conversely, it is impossible to pay for purchases in Hong Kong with the Macau currency which is the Pataca (MOP).

Concernant les moyens de paiement il en existe plusieurs. Le mieux est de réfléchir à ses propres besoins et de choisir le mode qui convient le mieux. Personnellement j'avais ma carte Visa sur moi, de la monnaie, mais surtout l'Octopus Card dont je parle plus en détail dans la rubrique " Métro et Octopus Card ", plus bas.

Regarding payment methods, there are several. The best thing to do is to think about your own needs and choose the mode that suits you best. Personally I had my Visa card on me, some change, but especially the Octopus Card which I talk about in more detail in the “Metro and Octopus Card” section, below.

Métro et Octopus Card

Inutile de louer une voiture à Hong Kong, où l'on roule à gauche, ni de prévoir un budget taxi pour se déplacer. Ici le métro couvre une grande partie du territoire et dessert les plus beaux lieux touristiques que je liste dans un article dédié » ICI «. Propre et ponctuel, il est accessible grâce à la carte Octopus, que l'on peut acheter dans les centres de services à la clientèle situés dans les stations de métro, de train, de ferry et à la gare routière Admiralty.

No need to rent a car in Hong Kong, where you drive on the left, or plan a taxi budget to get around. Here the metro covers a large part of the territory and serves the most beautiful tourist places which I list in a dedicated article » HERE «. Clean and punctual, it's accessible thanks to the Octopus card, which can be purchased in the service centers at the customers located in metro, train, ferry and Admiralty bus station.

En plus de pouvoir prendre le métro, l'Octopus Card permet de payer ses achats dans la plupart des commerces notamment 7-Eleven et Circle K. Il suffit de recharger sa carte, avec du cash, aux bornes prévues dans les stations de métro ou dans les commerces qui acceptent ce moyen de paiement. Pratique, elle permet de ne pas chercher sa monnaie ni alourdir son portefeuille et fait gagner du temps.

In addition to being able to take the metro, the Octopus Card allows you to pay for your purchases in most stores, including 7-Eleven and Circle K. Simply recharge your card, with cash, at the terminals provided in the metro stations or in shops that accept this way of payment. Practical, it allows you not to look for your change or weigh down your wallet and saves time.

Conseils à Hong Kong

Avec plus de 7 million d'habitants Hong Kong est une ville que je trouve surpeuplée ! Difficile d'avancer sur les trottoirs noirs de monde des rues et avenues principales. Prévoir ses visites tôt le matin est plus que conseillé pour profiter au mieux des plus beaux endroits à découvrir tout en évitant la foule mais aussi le plus gros de la pollution.

With more than 7 million inhabitants, Hong Kong is a city that I find overpopulated ! Difficult to move forward on the crowded sidewalks of the main streets and avenues. Planning your visits early in the morning is more than advisable to enjoy the most beautiful places to discover while avoiding the crowd but also the pollution.

Si tousser semble faire partie de la norme là bas, nul doute que la pollution est en partie responsable. C'est bien pour cela que prendre des masques chirurgicaux dans sa valise est une vraie bonne idée pour s'éviter maladies et problèmes respiratoires liés au combo foule + pollution et profiter au mieux de son voyage à Hong Kong !

If coughing seems to be part of the norm there, there's no doubt that pollution is partly responsible. This is why taking surgical masks in your suitcase is a really good idea to avoid illnesses and respiratory problems linked to the crowd + pollution combo and to enjoy your trip to Hong Kong !
